PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (May 19, 2014) — The 36th annual California Senior Women’s Amateur Championship is underway at the newly renovated Poppy Hills Golf Course. The 76 player field enjoyed moderate temperatures and light breezes.
Seven-time past champion, Marianne Towersey of Pebble Beach rebounded from a rocky front nine, carding 4 birdies on the back nine for a 3-under-par 33 and a 76 total. Towersey is tied for the lead with Lynne Cowan of Rocklin (38-38), the four-time California Women’s Amateur Champion.
Towersey commented, “I love Poppy Hills and it’s exciting to experience the new course in its infancy. The greens are smooth but hard to gauge at this point. It’s an exciting track. A lot can happen tomorrow.”
The 2005 USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion, Corey Weworski, of Carlsbad, finished tied for third with a 78 then dashed off for a late afternoon tee time at Pebble Beach. Sally Krueger, the 10-time San Francisco City Champion also shot a 78 and will round out the lead foursome.
Stacey Camara of Windosr, who recently entered the senior ranks, shot a 79 and sits tied for 4th with Juvy Timan of Watsonville and Judy Miller of Tucson, Arizona.
There is a tie in the Super Senior Division between Sharon Marshall of Lafayette and Marion Roberts of San Luis Obispo at 86.
Open to women age 50 and over, the Senior Women’s event is one of three tournaments hosted by the California Women’s Amateur Championship Committee. The California Junior Girls’ will be played at Monterey Peninsula Country Club in late June and the California Women’s Amateur will be at Quail Lodge in early August.
