National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the golfing community has come out in full force to show their support.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month promotes breast cancer research, seeks to educate both men and women about breast cancer and encourages women to do mammograms and breast self-examinations. To help promote the cause and bring awareness to the public regarding breast cancer, athletes and retailers alike have joined in on the cause.
In light of the breast cancer awareness month, we want to highlight just a few organizations making a difference:
Birdies for Breast Cancer– 14 time LPGA tour winner, Cristie Kerr, is just as passionate about her breast-cancer research foundation as she is about the game of golf. Kerr started Birdies for Breast Cancer in 2004 after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Kerr began the foundation by promising to donate $50 for every birdie she made on the golf course, and at the end of that year she personally donated $15,000 based off of the birdies she made. According to the WS Journal, Kerr now donates $17,000 annually based off of the birdies she makes on the course but now has corporate sponsers match her donations. Callaway Golf Gear- Callaway has promoted their support for breast cancer awareness by creating golf gear that LPGA icon’s wear all around the world (i.e. Paula Creamer).
Wilson Golf Gear-Callaway isn’t the only name brand promoting the pink ribbon on their product. Wilson has also branded their women and men’s apparel and golf gear, called “Hope” products, with the pink ribbon to help raise awareness for breast cancer.
Aldila- LPGA Paula Creamer was seen using the bright pink Aldila Pink NV shaft back in 07, but since then the company that created the shaft especially for Creamer decided to offer it to the public with the proceeds going to support the Komen Foundation.
These are just a few of the organizations making a difference to fight breast cancer, if you know a person or organization that uses golf to fight against breast cancer share with us below!
